Why You Should Watch The Very Hungry Caterpillar Show
Created by Eric Carle, the famous children’s author and illustrator, ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’ has been a massive favourite amongst young readers. It has sold more than 41 million copies over the last 50 years and is loved by children across the globe. First published in 1969, the book won the children’s literature award and numerous graphic design awards. Over five decades later, in 2012, the book was voted the second-best children’s picture book in the School Library Journal. This show is a stage adaptation of the book by Jonathan Rockefeller. The production has been critically acclaimed and showcases a beautiful collection of 75 cute and cuddlesome puppets. The production stays true to the original works and is one of the most soothing and sweet plays to have graced the London stage. This makes it perfect for children, especially if it is their first play.
The show features four stories which are '10 Little Rubber Ducks', 'Brown Bear', 'The Very Lonely Firefly' and the headliner of the production, 'The Very Hungry Caterpillar'. It is a colourful and kaleidoscopic show that has lots of lovable puppets, beautiful music, and playful dancing. The stories go over themes such as birth, the life of the firefly, and its metamorphosis. It introduces Mister Seahorse in his underwater abode with a shower of bubbles that float over the audience. The last story is a tale of a ravenous caterpillar who is determined to eat everything that he sees. He starts off with an apple on Monday, a couple of pears on Tuesday, and goes on expanding his diet until finally, he eats a piece of chocolate cake, an ice-cream cone, swiss cheese, cherry pie, a slice of watermelon, and much more on Saturday. The resulting stomach ache makes him curl up and go to sleep. Before long, he spins a cocoon around himself and hibernates for two weeks, until finally, a butterfly with multi-coloured wings emerges in a gorgeous display of metamorphosis.
