Why Watch BalletBoyz: Them/Us
BalletBoyz is a world-renowned group of dancers that have been performing for almost 2 decades. They have been involved in several documentaries, and have won an International Emmy, Golden Prague and Rose d’Or award. Keaton Henson is in charge of the score for Us, and his eclectic style of rock and classical music is beautiful to hear. Up and comer Charlotte Harding is in charge of the score for Them, and his music has been described as spare but rich and has been acclaimed for having melody without the predictability. Directors Michael Nunn and William Trevitt have ample experience as choreographers and dancers and have been praised for their ability to assemble the team of dancers and artists to create this dazzling show.
Olivier and Tony award-winning choreographer Christopher Wheeldon is in charge of the second half of the show. A choreographer of contemporary ballet, he has been appointed an Office of the Order of the British Empire and has been involved in choreography for ballet and theatre since 1997. His notable works include Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, An American in Paris, Carnival of the Animals, After the Rain and numerous other ballets. The double bill attempts to ask us the question of where we see ourselves in relation to the other, and the fine balance that one must keep between them and us.
The first half of the show, Them, is a collaborative effort by the dancers of the BalletBoyz company. Each dancer’s spirit has been highlighted in the show, and the huge range of movements/styles is incredible to see on stage. Us/Them showcases the 20 years of effort put in by the company after collaborating with some of the top designers, choreographers, and composers from across the world.
The latter half of the show depicts human connectedness, culminating in a touching duet that won critical acclaim in its debut. A climbing frame is used as a prop, for various gymnastic manoeuvres, showcasing the team’s incredible stamina and technique. Contrasting scores accompany the two acts, one more wide-ranging and diverse, and the other more melodic and soothing. While Them highlights the individual skills of the dancers, Us is all about their collective ability, and there is no doubt that you will be left awestruck by their synchronization and refinement!
