Why Watch Tumulus
Written by eminent British-American playwright Christopher Adams, Tumulus is a noir show that was widely acclaimed during its run in 2018. He went on to win the 2018 Origins Award for Outstanding New Work and is also a member of the Young Writer Programmer at the Royal Court Theater. A drug-fueled murder mystery, Tumulus returns to West End after a sell-out run at the 2018 Vault festival. Tumulus explores the chemsex culture of the UK and the darkest recesses of the lead character's mind. The play consists of just three cast members, who play nearly 40 roles between them. The paranoia and confusion of the queer noir genre work extremely well, and in combination with the agitated internal dialogue, the premise is fantastic. With the help of digitally generated voices and other sound effects, Tumulus pulls off the tense sections brilliantly. The inventive use of the limited space and props to create an atmosphere of mystery and noir is also deserving of praise. Do not miss this dark and riveting musical that is undoubtedly going to change your outlook!
Anthony is a librarian during the day. At night, the thirty-something-year-old frequents chemsex parties and is fully invested into the culture beneath Waterloo station. One day, Anthony finds out that his one-night stand has been found dead. The ghost of this young man haunts Anthony. Although deaths are common in this rave culture, it causes Anthony to suspect that something is amiss. He refuses to accept that this is just another death of the chemsex lifestyle, and is convinced that he must solve the case before the killer claims the next victim. A second body is found soon, and his suspicions are confirmed. Join Anthony as he goes on a hunt to find the killers, determined to get to the bottom of the mystery.
