Why Watch Andrea Chenier
World-famous tenor Jonas Kaufmann reprises his role as the legendary Andrea Chenier at the Sydney Opera House. With leading tenor roles at some of the biggest operas in the world, Jonas has been described as one of the most versatile opera performers of his generation. Composed by Umberto Giordano, the opera gives ample opportunity to the tenor lead to flaunt his theatrical voice, often propelling them to the front rank of contemporary opera singers. Kaufmann, in particular, has been praised for his ability to coalesce his dark and liquid tone with the refined intensity that the opera calls for. Ludovic Tezier, one of the leading baritones of the current generation, along with Eva-Maria Westbroek and Sian Pendry, make for the perfect supporting cast for the dramatic performance. Led by Pinchas Steinberg, you are in for an unforgettable night of verismo opera as the spectacular Sydney Opera House! Relive the tragic tale of Andrea Chenier with a memorable background score by the Opera Australia Orchestra.
The story is based on true events and is set in the midst of the French Revolution. France is on the brink of a transformation, resulting due to the appalling treatment of the poor by the nobility. Carlo Gerard, a servant of the de Coigny family, reaches his breaking point and leads the servants against the rich. A poet and philosopher, Andrea Chenier, also a defender of the poor, joins these revolutionaries as they attempt to overthrow the nobility and establish a new order. Maddalena de Coigny is the only surviving member of her family after her house was burned down by the revolutionaries. She is forced to go into hiding, and can only trust her servant, Bersi. Bersi meets Chenier and sets up a meeting between him and Maddalena. A spy catches Chenier meeting Maddalena and informs Gerard, who appears at the scene. Will Chenier be captured and falsely accused of betrayal? Can Maddalena save the life of her lover? Follow Andrea Chenier on his journey through love and revolution!
