Why You Should Watch Toni Stone
Based on a book by Martha Ackerman, called Curveball, The Remarkable Story of Toni Stone, the play focuses on the journey of Toni Stone as she goes on to become the first women to play professional baseball in the Negro League. Obie Award-winner April Matthis takes the lead and does a stellar job in portraying a woman who fought bigotry and always set her sights high. Pam Mackinnon, a multiple award-winning director, with a Tony, Obie, and Drama Desk award to her name, takes the reins. She aptly captures the toxic environment that Toni Stone had to battle her way through, on her journey to the top.
Toni Stone grew up playing baseball and fell in love with the sport. She took every chance to play and was always eager to compete with the boys and men. Getting into these games, however, was not so easy. She had to put in hours of practice to ensure that other players, managers, and coaches would not overlook her ability. Discrimination based on race and gender was a common occurrence. Join Toni Stone on her journey to break prejudice and become a beacon of hope for women across the world!
