Relish the magic of Umm Kulthum brought to life by the talented Tunisian singer Ghalia Benali at the Dubai Opera. Produced by the the Arts Canteen and MWSOUL Art Foundation of Belgium, the show is bound to be amongst the most sought after musical performances this February.

Why Watch A Tribute to Umm Kulthum

Umm Kulthum was bestowed the title Kawab A Sharq, which translates to ‘Star of the Orient’, for her exemplary contribution to the music of the Middle East. She rose to become one of the 20th century’s most influential singers and songwriters. In her home country, she was dubbed ‘The Voice of Egypt’. Her music is influenced by traditional Persian melodies, leading to prodigious use of native instruments. This did not stop her from exploring a range of styles, placing her amongst some of the most versatile musicians in the world.

Her legacy is honoured by Ghalia Benali on February 16 at the Dubai Opera. Today, she is the face of contemporary Arabic music. As a singer who grew up during the explosion of the world music phenomena, her influences are varied and rich. She has a truly polymorphic voice that is worthy of a tribute to the legendary Umm Kulthum.

The Show

Ghalia Benali demonstrates her mastery of ‘Tarab’ or ‘enchantment’. Umm Kulthum’s music was characterized by this very concept of Tarab, a style of singing that enthralled audiences throughout the 1950s and 60s. Benali also comes close to Kulthum’s famous contralto vocal range. She is set to revive exceptional classics such as Nahg El Borda and Raba El Adawya at the Dubai Opera.
