Why You Should Watch The Red Shoes
Why You Should Watch The Red Shoes
The Red Shoes is a wildly popular fairytale by Hans Christian Andersen that captivated audiences across the world as an Academy Award-winning film by Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger. It has been adapted for the stage by Matthew Bourne, one of the most successful choreographers in England. The show is set to an all-new score by Terry Davies, who makes use of the spellbinding music of Bernard Hermann. Hermann is a legendary composer from the golden age of Hollywood who was famous for having collaborated with Orson Welles and Alfred Hitchcock. The music for the show is played live by New Adventures Orchestra. It also features a brilliantly designed set and charming costume designs by Lez Brotherston.
The Show
The show traces the tale of a passionate girl named Victoria Page, who dreams of being the most renowned dancer in the world. She is born to dance, but the trials that lie ahead are insurmountable. The adaptation is a thrilling drama that is sure to overwhelm your senses and fill you with deep sorrow. Bourne has given a lot of emphasis to the idea of dance in the production. The original plot has been watered down to fit this new medium and is full of duets, solos, and an array of ensemble arrangements. His 17-member cast does justice to this incredible work of art that barely has any dialogue. Everything that Bourne wants to convey is done through dance and music instead of dialogue, resulting in an emphatically fresh experience for the audience.

Critic Reviews
“If ever there was a film destined to be reinvented as a stage ballet, 'The Red Shoes' is it — and Matthew Bourne is just the director to envision it.”
