A Place for We Tickets

A masterpiece by Archie Maddocks, A Place For We is a poignant exploration of how the public perception of minorities in England has been gradually degrading over the decades!

Why You Should Watch A Place For We

Shortly after several families in the Carribean community in England were adversely affected by mistaken detention and deportation (Windrush Scandal of 2018), A Place For We comes as a timely examination of shifting public opinion. The play was originally named Nine Nights. Archie Maddocks is relatively new to theatre, but his productions have already featured at the Lyric Hammersmith, Royal Court, Bush Theatre, and even New York. As one of the most promising upcoming playwrights in London, he won the Bruntwood Prize for Playwriting in October 2019. Maddocks is also a well-known stand-up comedian who won the Bath Festival New Comedian 2014. A Place For We is directed by the accomplished Michael Buffong, the Artistic Director of Talawa Theatre Company. Buffong has been a highly influential director for over two decades, and he is best known for directing classic plays such as All My Sons and King Lear. His influence extends to television and film as well; he has worked with BBC, Lime Pictures, and Channel4. A Place For We is a bittersweet comedy that serves as an essential inspection of fear, instability, and volatility in England.

    The Story

Across three generations, the same building in Brixton morphs from a funeral parlor to a pub, and then into an urban-zenn enoteca and conscious eatery. How will a traditional West Indian funeral parlor survive after the West Indian community has almost completely disappeared in the area? Clarence, a Trinidadian funeral director, and a pub owner named George are unwilling to adapt to the changing social climate around them. Should they stay rooted in tradition and family business, or should they move on?
