Why You Shouldn’t Miss This
There are few places that embody the natural beauty and local culture of Iceland as extensively as the Snæfellsnes Peninsula. It has aptly been named “Iceland in Miniature”. Many of country’s defining tourist attractions lie in this peninsula. The glacier, lava caves, fishing villages, mountains, and beaches that constitute this location make it one of Iceland’s most visited parts.
Kirkjufell is Iceland’s most photographed mountains. It has many names including ‘Church Mountain’ and ‘Arrowhead Mountain’. It has seen multiple pop-culture references as well.
Djúpalónssandur is famous for its ‘four lifting stones’ that sit on the black sand beach. Men would prove their worth by picking up the stones and placing them on ledges that were at the height of about 3-feet from the ground. Hellnar and Arnarstapi are small fishing villages that have great historical significance. Many of the fishing facilities have been restored in these villages due to the increase in tourism. Snæfellsjökull is a stratovolcano that became quite popular after Jules Verne mentioned it in his book ‘Journey to the Center of the Earth’.
The first stop on this tour is Kirkjufell. Take photographs of this fantastic mountain and savor the picturesque surroundings. The water that surrounds the place reflects the mountain clearly makes it seem like Kirkjufell is stretching both inward and upward to the sky. You may also find fascinating fossilized fishes and birds. You will then head to Djúpalónssandur, home to one of the most beautiful black sand beaches in Iceland. After relaxing for a while and taking in the scenery, you will journey on to Arnarstapi through the village of Hellnar.
Learn about how the literary history and fishing industry of Iceland are embodied by this small village. Visit the harbours here that are still maintained quite well. There will be many more minor stops in towns and villages like Borgarnes before you return to Reykjavik. While food is not included in the package, you can purchase something to eat at any of the stops. While traveling along the western and southern edges of the peninsula, you might even be able to spot Snæfellsjökull, the wonderful stratovolcano that is capped by a glacier, if the visibility is good enough.
