Crowned by Byzantine monasteries, the stunning rock formations of Meteora are a sight to behold. On this small-group sunset tour, you will enjoy an afternoon visit to the hidden gems of this tourist attraction. An enthusiastic guide will lead you through the winding narrow roads to offbeat tracks that only locals know of. First up on the list is the monastery Agios Stefanos, which has been converted into a nunnery since WWII. Gasp at the views of the vast valley of Thessaly, the river Pinios and the Pindos mountain range across the plain.
Next, head over to the oldest-standing monument, the Byzantine church of the Assumption of Virgin Mary, in Kalambaka. Built on top of the ruins of a Christian church, the monument has managed to preserve Greek history for the past 25 centuries. Within its walls, you'll find architectural features that depict the transition from the ancient religion to the Christian period and all the different evolutionary stages of Eastern Christianity in the past 2000 years.
Then, make your way to the thousand-year-old hermitage of Bandovas, which was built like a cave system. Learn about the legends surrounding this monument, and enjoy spectacular views from here. As the sun slowly starts to set, your guide will take you high up on the rocks of Meteora - a truly magical spot that has the most captivating sunset views. Sit on the edge of the cliff, feel the cool breeze in your hair, and savor the moment. Let your senses soak in each moment as the daylight dims and the sunset colors wash over the earth and the sky. This is a delightful way to end a beautiful day at Meteora and will be a memory you will cherish forever.
