The Snæfellsnes Peninsula is known to be one of the most picturesque parts of Iceland. Many of Iceland’s top tourist spots are situated here. Many attractions like the Kirkjufell and Snæfellsjökull mountains have been mentioned in many popular books and TV shows.
The seal colony by Ytri-Tunga farm boasts a diverse range of bird species, and of course, hundreds of seals. June and July are the best months to go seal-watching in this region. The tranquil Arnarstapi and Hellnar fishing villages are filled with Icelandic culture. The saga of Bárðar, which is one of the oldest European literary works, heavily influenced the names in this area. Both the villages have been reviving quite well since the rise of the tourism industry in Iceland.
The Vatnshellir cave is located about 35 meters underground. It has some fascinating stalactites and stalagmites along with many weirdly shaped structures of hardened lava.
Djúpalónssandur is amongst the most serene beaches in Iceland. The black-pebbles and the irresistible view of the ocean make it an ideal place to blissfully gaze at the waves and contemplate the meaning of life. Grundarfjörður is another beautiful fishing village in the peninsula. It is encircled by lofty mountains. There are many interesting legends surrounding this hamlet as well.

The Snæfellsnes Peninsula and Cave Exploration Tour takes you all the way from Reykjavik to Borgarfjörður on arguably one of the most spectacular routes in the world. You will make many short stops along the way in small towns and villages where you can buy refreshments and relax.
The seal colony at the Ytri-Tunga Farm is the first destination. The beach is located at the entrance to the peninsula, and is home to seals and birds. You will get an opportunity to go reasonably close to the friendly seals, although it is more pleasurable to simply sit back and watch these amazing creatures in their habitat. The Arnarstapi and Hellnar fishing villages are next on the itinerary. Here, you can have lunch and enjoy interacting with the locals for a while. The Vatnshellir lava tube cave is perhaps the most compelling part of this tour. Descending into this cave and watching the enchanting stalactites and stalagmites as you listen to the water dripping gently through the lava is an experience like no other.
From the depths of Vatnshellir, you will travel to the peaceful black-pebbled beach of Djúpalónssandur. After spending some time here, you will be led to the scenic Grundarfjordur fishing village that is situated right in between a mountain range and the sea. Click a few photos of the iconic Kirkjufell mountain before heading back to Reykjavik through the picturesque Berserkjahraun lava fields.
