Why Watch Molly Sweeney
Why Watch Molly Sweeney
From one of Ireland’s best living playwrights - Brian Friel, this striking piece of dramatic writing is an unforgettable experience that speaks directly to the audience. Helmed by artistic director Jonathan Silverstein, this intriguing tale is told from the perspective of three distinct personalities whose voices weave a lush narrative, all the while carrying you toward a poignant conclusion. Rich in layers and meaning, there are many insights one can take away from this story. Pamela Sabaugh, with her personal experience as a person with low vision stars in the title role. Her spectacular acting paints sceneries while also rousing emotions through beautifully rendered words.
The Story
Molly Sweeney is the melancholic tale of a 41-year-old woman who, blind since infancy, suddenly regains her sight after an operation. Having long experienced the world through touch, sound, smell, and taste, Molly has her own way of seeing the world. She feels complete nevertheless and her blindness has never proven to be a setback. When her adoring and eccentric husband, Frank, and the once renowned and now alcoholic surgeon, Mr. Rice, suggest a sight-restoring operation, she goes through with it. What then follows is a masterful monologue that explains how someone deprived of literal sight experiences a totally satisfactory world, in the sense of viewing things from wholly new perspectives. The play also demonstrates the loss of a familiar world to something new which can eventually wreak unbearable havoc.
