Wozzeck Tickets

Enjoy an opera that has fascinated, shocked, and engaged audiences since its premiere in the early part of the 20th century. Witness Alban Berg’s magnum opus, as his vocal and instrumental writing prowess comes to light at the Metropolitan Opera House. Do not miss William Kentridge’s all-new production with a star-studded lineup that is guaranteed to take your breath away!

    Why Watch Wozzeck

The first opera by legendary Austrian composer, Alban Berg, Wozzeck premiered in 1925. The opera was based on the incomplete drama by playwright Georg Buchner, and Berg adapted the libretto all by himself, with the goal of retaining the spirit and character of the play. Exploring themes of social exploitation and militarism, the opera presents the sadism of the apocalyptic environment in a brutal manner.

William Kentridge astounded audiences in 2015 with his production of Berg’s Lulu. His visual imagination was acclaimed by critics and the audience alike, and he is all set to focus on Berg’s other operatic masterpiece. His use of visuals in opera in the form of black and white drawings and flowing images is second to none. Peter Mattei takes the role of the title character, and doesn’t start off as a wild-eyed lunatic, but rather as somehow in whom the pressure builds up. Kentridge captures the Europe of the early 1920s, just as it is recovering from the World War, a world that is on the verge of even more suffering.

    The Story

Wozzeck, a solider, is shaving the Captain. The officer tells him that although he is a good man, he lacks morality. Wozzeck says that virtue isn’t something that the poor can afford to bother about.

Marie, who is the mother of Wozzeck’s illegitimate child, and Margret watch soldiers match past their window. Marie admires the handsome Drum Major and is mocked by Margret. She sings a lullaby to her young son when Wozzeck arrives and tells Marie about the visions he had seen, which he believes to be an omen of the things to come. As Marie tries to console him, Wozzeck runs off to the barracks. Marie too, overwhelmed by her fears, runs out of the room leaving the child alone.

Wozzeck visits the doctor, who dismisses his visions as mere imagination. Meanwhile, the Drum Major makes advances towards Marie, who gives in to him.

Will Wozzeck learn about Marie’s infidelity? Will his visions come true as he wallows in his delusions?
