Frankie and Johnny in the Clair de Lune is a story that has stayed relatable even in 2019 as much as in 1987. It is a delightful romantic comedy about two lonely souls, treading the shaky waters post a one-night stand. It makes one believe that making love is easy, but falling in love is hard. The play is written by Terrence McNally who is heralded as one of the best contemporary playwrights of all time and was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Awards at the Tony Awards 2019.

The casting of the title roles couldn’t have been better and features six-time Tony Award winner Audra McDonald. Audra manages to don vulnerability in her role as Frankie and is best known for her work in ‘Carousel,’ ‘Masterclass,’ and ‘A Raisin in the Sun.’ Michael Shannon joins her as Johnny in a role where he brings earnestness to the character. Michael is known for his work in ‘Long Day’s Journey into Night,’ and ‘Mistakes Were Made.’

The Story

Frankie and Johnny in the Clair de Lune is the story of a couple in 1987 in New York, and how their one-night stand turns into something unexpected. Frankie is a waitress in a food joint where Johnny works as a chef. After flirting back and forth, they finally go on a first date and find themselves in Frankie’s walkup apartment in the seedy neighbourhood of Hell’s Kitchen.

Frankie has big hopes of making it in Hollywood, but much to her despair found herself working as a waitress to pay the bills. Her abusive childhood has marred her confidence, and she believes she is frumpy and undesirable. She is eager to send off Johnny after their tryst because she doesn’t think their relationship has any future. But Johnny is out to prove her wrong; he tries hard to express himself and convince her that he genuinely finds her attractive and wants her to give them a fair shot.

The AIDS epidemic continues to grip the city and commitment is a scary word for everyone. In fact, Frankie and Johnny are in their 40s and they lie about their age to each other. Watch Johnny as he requests the late night radio DJ to play Claude De Bussy’s ‘Clair De Lune’ which he believes is the most beautiful musical composition ever written and wishes to make it their song.
