Why Watch English National Ballet: My First Ballet: Sleeping Beauty
The tale of Sleeping Beauty has been told over and over again in various formats. There are few that come close to the artful narration and the colorful manner in which each of the characters are presented in the English National Ballet’s version of the story. Tchaikovsky’s immortal score has been shortened to a 1½-hour spectacle that is perfectly suited for children. It will be performed by an immensely talented troupe of students from the English National Ballet, which has managed to leave audiences hungry for more since its inception in 2012.
Princess Aurora is born to King Florestan XXIV and his queen. An extravagant christening ceremony is announced to celebrate the birth of the princess. Folk and fairies from all corners of the kingdom are invited to rejoice at the party. Cabbarose, the mischievous and evil fairy, does not, however, receive an invitation from the king. At the ceremony, various virtues like gentleness, charm, and bravery are bestowed upon the princess by the fairies. In a fit of rage, Carabosse makes a chilling entrance into the palace and curses Aurora, declaring that the princess will prick herself and die on her 16th birthday. Is Aurora doomed to die? Will the mighty and kind Lilac Fairy come to her rescue? Although specifically tailored for children, this is a classic that the entire family can enjoy!
