La Damnation de Faust Tickets

Witness Hector Berlioz’s dramatic legend, La Damnation de Faust, in this revival at the Metropolitan Opera. With stars such as Elina Garanca and Bryan Hymel taking on leading roles, the production promises to be an unforgettable experience. Enjoy an entertaining performance of the tragic story of Faust!

Why Watch La Damnation de Faust

Composed by the renowned Romantic composer Louis-Hector Berlioz, La Damnation de Faust premiered in Paris in 1846. It was inspired by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's poem Faust. Berlioz’s score has astounded audiences since its premiere, and the wild and fragmented elements are considered to be a work of genius.

The production asks to be called more of a concert performance rather than an opera and is a return to the roots of the original work. Berlioz intended and described it to be a dramatic legend in four parts and never meant for it to be staged in the theatre. The Hungarian March, in particular, is a well-known piece of music and is sure to make you hum along to its tunes.

Bryan Hymel’s performance as Faust at the Santa Fe Opera is 2011 was met with critical acclaim and he reprises the role in this production. The Met chorus continues to put up spectacular performances, and colourful playing by the orchestra is sure to take your breath away!

    The Story

An ageing scholar, Faust is depressed and tired of life. He contemplates suicide since he realizes that he can no longer experience simple happiness and that even the search for wisdom no longer excites or inspires him. He hears an army march by in the distance and wonders what about glory and fame excites the soldiers so much.

Just as he is about to take his life, Mephistopheles appears and promises to take Faust on a journey that will restore his youth and happiness. Faust agrees, and the pair set out a journey. During their expedition, Mephistopheles shows Faust the vision of a woman, causing him to fall in love with her.

Will Faust find this mysterious woman and regain the spark that he believes he has lost? Is Mephistopheles just a kind spirit who has set out to help Faust, or does he have some ulterior motives in mind?
