Gregorio Armeno with its nativity scenes. The Beauty that lies Underneath
Known as the city of art, Naples is a city of exceptional beauty, but very few know about the underground reality of the city. Grab this opportunity to dig deep into the history of Naples as you tour Naples's Underground. Journey through 2,400 years of the past, from the Ancient Greeks to today's modern era. Unveil the "womb" of Naples from an archeological, historical, anthropological, and geological point of view. Walk down 136 steps, low and comfortable, and unearth the tuffaceous cavities excavated in the Greek era, exploited as cisterns for the water supply of the city for approximately 23 centuries. Grab a candle and light your path as you make your way through the aqueducts and raid shelters from the Second World War.
In the darkness of the Naples Underground, life does exist. Visit the Hypogeum Gardens, a new project spearheaded by the association of Naples underground which offers visitors an educational and scientific perspective. Next, walk into a seemingly typical Neopolitan house, commonly known as the "low" because of its location at street level. Once you're inside, open a hatch underneath the bed to expose the ancient remains of Neopolis Theatre, where the emperor Nero had his private dressing room, whenever he performed his shows in Naples. Lastly, head to a recently expanded part of the tour, with a discovery, Top Gage. This fraction of the Roman Theater reappears in old carpentry where there is a permanent exhibition of "Scarabattoli", a glass kiosk exhibiting images and sacred objects, to preserve the nativity scenes and the popular manger. This experience within the subsoil of Naples will truly show you the other face of this monumental city.
