I’d never heard of this one before until I saw it on a travel blog that I follow. Heard it opened quite recently and thought it would be worth checking out while I was in Rome with my husband and kids. Rest assured fellow morbid tomb enthusiasts, this mausoleum does not disappoint.

The Ara Pacis turned out to be more beautiful than I imagined. The carvings on the altar are an absolute treat to watch. Booking was quite straightforward. I was not sure how I could get the audioguide on my phone, but the support staff was very helpful in that regard.

Creepy ancient tomb with the statue of a borderline psychotic Roman conqueror. Seems somewhat cliched, but trust me, this one’s special. Cheers

On this tour, you will get an opportunity to discover a lesser-known but equally gorgeous historical site. After remaining closed for over 13 years due to restoration work, the Mausoleum of Augustus is finally opening to the public in 2021. Be amongst the first group of visitors to explore this intriguing tomb of Rome’s most powerful emperor.

Learn about the life and exploits of Emperor Augustus, son of Ceasar, as you delve into the depths of the tomb with your audio guide. The mausoleum was built to honor Augustus’ victorious return from the Battle of Actium in 31 BC. You will find the Emperor’s own urn tucked under the imposing statue at the center of the monument. If you choose the Ara Pacis variant, you can also witness the sumptuous altar dedicated to Pax, the goddess of Peace. The Ara Pacis was also built to commemorate one of Emperor Augustus’ military triumphs.
