Add some color to your day of sightseeing with a visit to Xochimilco and Coyoacan. Meet your tour group and head toward your first destination - Coyoacán or ‘the place of coyotes,’ where Frida Kahlo spent most of her life. Snake along tree-lined blocks, enjoy the sights and sounds of exotic squares and wander down cobblestoned alleys lined with cafés, antique shops, and craft stalls. Coyoacán apart from being a Bohemian and artistic draw is known for one other thing - the National University of Mexico (UNAM), which boasts of eccentric murals referencing Mexican heritage, culture, history, and primordial origins. Spend time admiring the works of famous artists who were involved in the Mexican Muralist Movement.
Next, you will head to the wondrous, watery, and flower-strewn oasis of Xochimilco, one of Frida Kahlo’s favorite places. This gritty neighborhood serves as the last remnants of the Aztec’s intricate canal and farming system called chinampas. Go punting along the ancient waterways on a colorful trajinera (flat-bottomed boat), and surround yourself with a roving world of mariachi and marimba music.
