Moorish Castle
Perched atop one of the peaks of Sintra Hills, this fortress was built to serve the purpose of watchtower and observation post back when large swathes of Portugal were occupied by the Moors.
The castle has a rich history, which can be seen very evidently from its ruins. The power of controlling the castle has passed through many hands, including Portuguese, Vikings, and Christian rule. With Sintra’s importance dwindling, the castle was eventually abandoned. The castle offers astonishing views from all sides. Towards the south, view the great river Tejo to Arrabida, and to the west, Cabo da Roca, and to the north, Peniche. From the top of the castle, get to view the Pena Palace and the hills of Sintra. Today the castle is a National Monument and UNESCO World Heritage Site.
