Your Experience

Few artists of the 19th-century have traveled as much as François Auguste Biard, whose wanderlust served as a muse for several of his works. An ethnographer painter and a true nomad, his knack for recreating the grandiose landscapes of the North and the Amazon rainforest are truly noteworthy. Biard was part of a movement at the end of the 18th century and throughout the 19th century, where he undertook a journey to explore the world, its flora, its fauna, and its indigenous populations.

This first major retrospective offers a brilliant opportunity to learn and admire the spectacular works of Biard. In addition to portraits and self-portraits, the exhibition will also feature genre scenes, historical compositions on famous sailors, several works relating to the question of slavery, from the 1830s to the 1860s, and trips to Brazil, Spitsbergen, and Lapland. It may seem odd that the exhibition is being presented at Victor Hugo House, given Hugo’s relationship with Biard’s ex-wife, but it adds a whole other layer to the story.
