Your Experience
Your Experience
Through this exhibition, visitors are invited to look at nature and maritime landscapes as a reflection of the soul, which is more often than not, romantic! It explores the dramatic consequences of shipwrecks and the loss that takes place at sea before the storm has passed. The sea, violent and chaotic in its character, reflects the inner conflicts of the artist, who through patterns of gales, threatening clouds, sinking ships, and endangered characters, brings sublime and dramatic scenes to life. This in turn reveals a vivid palette of heightened feelings such as terror or admiration in front of the strength and beauty of nature.
Organized in three parts, the exhibition follows the source of the storm, its dramatic exposition in the open sea, in the heart of Romanticism, and its aftermath: wrecks and castaways. In addition to paintings and drawings by Joseph Vernet, Théodore Géricault, and Gustave Courbet among many, the visitor also has access to the tempestuous writings of Denis Diderot, Henri Bernardin de Saint-Pierre, Victor Hugo, and Jules Michelet, as well as, the musical creations of Ludwig van Beethoven, and Richard Wagner.
