Why Watch ¡GUARACHA!
Adapted from the internationally bestselling novel by Luis Rafael Sanchez, La guaracha del Macho Camacho, ¡GUARACHA! is the latest musical satire to showcase at the Puerto Rican Traveling Theater. Featuring several over the top and wild characters, the play promises to be a ride full of entertainment and fun. Written and directed by Rosalba Rolon, the current artistic director and founder of the Pregones Theater Company, ¡GUARACHA! is her attempt at satirical comedy. The Pregones Theater Company has performed in over 13 different countries, including partnerships with numerous theater companies in Belgium, Peru, Slovakia, and South Africa. Rolon’s productions are usually bubbling with energy, just like life in Puerto Rico. Her ability to combine infectious music with memorable staging and unforgettable characters ensures that the audience has an experience of a lifetime.
The story is set in a sultry afternoon in the mid-1970s in the city of San Juan, Puerto Rico. In the blazing heat, every car in the afternoon traffic jam is blaring La Vida es una Cosa Phenomenal, which translates to Life is a Phenomenal Thing. A number of characters, The Senator, The Deejay, The Mistress, The Son, The Socialite Wife, and of course Dona Chen are introduced. The play pokes fun at the messy situation that is certainly out of control. Follow the wild group on their adventures through town!
