Why Watch Bella Bella
A renowned screenwriter and playwright, in addition to his acting credits, Harvey Fierstein is one of the most well-known figures in the entertainment industry. He has won Tony Awards for acting for his roles in Hairspray and Torch Song Trilogy, and Tony Awards for playwriting with Torch Song Trilogy and La Cage aux Folles. Some of his most famous movies include Mrs. Doubtfire and Independence Day.
Director Kimberly Senior is well-known for Disgraced by Ayad Akhtar, her 2013 Pulitzer Prize-winning play and The Niceties. Fierstein wonderfully captures Abzug’s fierceness and her political prowess. Senior lets Fierstein retreat to his element, as he brings out a memorable performance of one of the most feisty and inspirational figures of American politics.
It is September 1976, and Bella bids to become the first female Senatorial candidate from New York state. Inside a bland bathroom at the Summit Hotel in Manhattan at 2 AM, she wryly comments to herself about bathroom politics. Just outside the door, Lily Tomlin, Shirley MacLaine, and Gloria Steinem are waiting for her to calm down and step out, to address her friends, family, staff, and constituents.
With five Democrats competing, does she stand a chance to win the seat, fulfilling her long-time ambition and dream? Will she be able to cross the final hurdle, following heartbreakingly close political losses in the past?
