Located in the northeastern part of the island, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria boasts an important historical and cultural heritage. Much of this can be found in the old neighborhood of Vegueta, which saw Admiral Cristóbal Colón landfall up to three times. There's also the Triana neighborhood, full of beautiful modernist buildings. It was here that the illustrious writer Benito Pérez Galdós was born. Follow an expert guide through these iconic streets and get an understanding of the history of the island.
Pass by the enclave in which the 15th-century royal conquest of the Canary Islands took place. Stroll through winding alleys and admire the first noble houses that were built after the conquest of the land. See the former military-hospital-turned-heritage-complex, the San Martín Centre for Contemporary Culture. This is one of the best witnesses of the last two centuries of the island's history. Continue along to Calle de Los Balcones and Plaza del Pilar Nuevo, a former gathering place for the women who came to collect water from the central pillar. The square, which still retains a charming stone fountain, plays host to the Craft and Culture Market. From here, you can enter the Cathedral of Santa Ana (optional). It is considered to be the most important monument of Canarian religious architecture.
At Plaza de Santa Ana, admire the historic buildings around you. End your tour at either Casa de los Gobernadores or Museo de Colón (optional). Your guide will tell you all about the magnificent history of the building and its connection with the famous navigator, Christopher Columbus.
