Why Watch Cloud Gate Dance Theatre of Taiwan — 13 Tongues & Dust
Why Watch Cloud Gate Dance Theatre of Taiwan — 13 Tongues & Dust
The show consists of two parts, Dust and 13 Tongues. Dust focuses on the battle of Dresden, and specifically Russian composer, Dmitri Shostakovich’s response to the destruction of the city. Dancers can be seen struggling as dirt, smoke and darkness envelopes the city in a twisted manner. 13 Tongues is set in Bangka, the oldest district of Taipei, and captures the bustling life and sounds of the city. Formed in 1973 by the renowned choreographer Lin Hwai-min, Cloud Gate Dance Theatre has gone on to establish itself as one of the very best modern dance troupes in the world.
Showcasing an amalgamation of movement disciplines that include modern dance, ballet, mediation, and even martial arts, the company promises to bring back their famed innovative choreography. The new artistic director, Cheng Tsung-Lung is in charge of 13 Tongues, while founder Lin Hwai-Min choreographs Dust. Hwai-min is all set to retire in 2020, after bringing contemporary dance to the forefront of China and establishing his company as one of the proudest cultural products of Taiwan. The spectacular sound and lighting design, combined with the stunning choreography instantly guarantee an unforgettable night at West End!
