Why Watch Orphée
Created by Phillip Glass, one of the most renowned composers of the 20th century, Orphee is based on the 1950 film by Jean Cocteau. Also known for his film scores, Glass is a 3-time Academy Award nominee and has won the Golden Globe and BAFTA Awards. Director Netia Jones also includes fragments of the original film in the opera, using a combination of projection and live-action effects. The Story
Orphée is a well-known poet, who is visiting the Cafe des Poetes in Paris. Here, he meets Princess and Cegeste, a handsome poet. Certain events ensue, and the Princess reanimates Cegeste at a ruined chateau and disappears into a mirror. Orphée is then taken back to his home by the Princess’s chauffeur, Heurtebise. Orphée’s pregnant wife, Eurydice, is discussing the disappearance of her husband with her friend, Aglaonice, just as he arrives home. Orphée, however, refuses to share the details of his mysterious night with Eurydice, and invites Heurtebise to stay with them until the Princess returns. When Eurydice is killed, Heurtebise offers to lead Orphée through the Zone, a region between lie and death, into the Underworld, so he can rescue his wife. Will Orphée go to any length to save his wife, or is he blinded by his newfound love for the Princess?
