Your Experience

Attend an exhibition that traces the life and works of Victor Brauner, a painter of mystery. Quoting the artist himself, this major retrospective is titled Je suis le rêve. Je suis l'inspiration (I am the dream. I am the inspiration). Born in Romania, the man was a true visionary nourished as much by dreams as by the vast unknown. He was deeply involved in the Avant-garde artistic scene of the 1920s – Expressionism, Constructivism, Dada – the radical spirits of which matched his own. He eventually drifted towards a dream-like style of painting, following which he joined the surrealist movement in 1933 Paris, fully embracing its pet themes of eroticism, random objectivity, the interpretation of dreams, and the occult sciences.

During the war, Brauner, who was a Jew, was forced into exile. Instead of being deterred, he sought refuge in a period of rich artistic discoveries. In 1931 Victor Brauner painted a self-portrait that subsequently became famous as a premonition of Surrealism’s theories. It so happened that in his portrait, he was pictured without a left eye, seven years before the same eye was accidentally ripped out of his face during an unfortunate brawl. This painting, along with several others will be showcased during the exhibition, attempting to shed new light on the contributions and the artist himself.
