Why Watch Translations
Why Watch Translations
Translations, playing at the National Theatre from 15th October to 18th October, is written masterfully by Brian Friel and sheds light on the turbulent relationship between England and Ireland. The show returns to West End after a critically and commercially acclaimed run in 2018 and features the same cast. Leading the cast is Ciaran Hinds (Girl from the North Country) returning to his critically acclaimed role as schoolmaster and patriarch, Hugh, who stands against external threats to his livelihood and culture. Translations is directed by Ian Rickson with set design by Rae Smith.
The Story
Set in 19th century Ireland, Translations begins with the arrival of British soldiers to a small Gaelic Community. The soldiers are on a mission to conduct an ordnance survey with the intention of replacing Gaelic names with English, but find it difficult to overcome the language barrier. Amongst them is Owen, the prodigal son, returning to rural Donegal from Dublin. This modern classic focuses on the rocky relationship between England and Ireland while focusing on one quiet community. Funny in parts, Translations tackles a universal problem affecting the human condition.
