Tucked away from the open sea, the Museum Centro Botín sits directly on the waterfront of Santander's tranquil bay. It was designed by the world-renowned architect Renzo Piano, who built it while keeping in mind its relationship with its maritime environment. To offer visual access to the water, Piano lifted the building on slender stilts and made the ground-level interior spaces entirely transparent. Piano covered the building with 270,000 ceramic discs, creating a kind of pointillist façade that reflects Santander’s distinctive light. He also collaborated with landscape designer Fernando Caruncho and restored and extended the historic Pereda Gardens, into which the building is now set.

Currently, there are three exhibitions on offer at the museum. Architecture into Art: a Dialogue seeks to engage in a dialogue with the Centro Botín building itself. It addresses the somewhat ambiguous relationship artists have with the architects who create the space in which they present their work; and the no-less ambiguous status of “starchitects”, who are often regarded as artists. Find here works by Leonor Antunes, Miroslaw Balka, Carlos Bunga, Fernanda Fragateiro, Carlos Garaicoa, Muntadas, Juliao Sarmento and others. Following a similar approach, Outlooks on Art presents a new series of smaller thematic exhibitions. These take into account the eclecticism of the collection and aim to create an appreciation of the works by showcasing them in different contexts. Explore here art by Atsuko Arai, Nora Aurrekoetxea, David Bestué, Eva Fàbregas, Juan López, Clara Montoya and Juan Luis Moraza, among others.

Portraits: Essence and Expression will permanently host a selection of 20th-century masterpieces from the Jaime Botín art collection. This selection of works reflects almost entirely the art of the 20th century, kicking off with Half Body Figure, painted by Nonell in 1907, and ending with Self Portrait with Injured Eye by Francis Bacon in 1972. It also brings together works by Spanish artists with a high plastic value but less recognition beyond the borders.
