If you're a fan of musicals, you simply must see Les Misérables. Cameron Mackintosh, the producer of Les Mis, is back with Boublil and Schönberg's adaptation of Victor Hugo's famous classic. The new production, directed by Laurence Connor and James Powell, incorporates Hugo's own smudgy paintings. The scenes are vivid without being intrusive; Paule Constable's lighting transforms the stage into smoky illustrations, making each scene come across like a painting in its own right.
Jon Robyns plays tender-hearted Valjean and does justice to the character's tortured valor. He also manages to sing "Bring Him Home" with a gentle passion, while at the same time boom to the bigger numbers. Carrie Hope Fletcher singing "I Dreamed A Dream" is simply beautiful, whereas Shan Ako as Éponine, has some of the very best songs.
