why watch opera undone

Tosca and La Boheme have been performed innumerable times across the world. These masterpieces by Puccini premiered in Italy between the years 1895 and 1900 and their popularity and contribution to opera is truly unparalleled. Tosca is an intricate composition that is woven together by aria, recitative, and choruses amongst other elements. In an era of unrest, Tosca told a tale of deception and love that resonated strongly with the public. Its powerful score and characteristic leitmotifs have kept audiences coming back to witness the spectacle over and over again for more than a century! La Boheme is an opera that has risen to become one of the most frequently performed operas in the world. It is an interesting amalgam of vignettes that portray the suffering and romantic exploits of a group of young Bohemians who have made the Latin Quarter of Paris their home.

To address the tastes of both newcomers and hardcore fans, this double bill adopts a fresh approach to the idea of opera. The sheer amount of intrigue and drama packed into two hours is truly a sight to behold. After an Olivier Award-worthy production of La Boheme in 2017, the Trafalgar Studios company is set to take the stage by storm again in the spring of 2020.

The Story

Tosca tells the tale of Rome’s most famous singer Floria Tosca and her lover, an artist named Mario Cavaradossi. Angelotti, a political prisoner, flees from the authoritarian Roman government that has appointed the oppressive Baron Scarpia as its chief of police. Cavaradossi agrees to shelter the political prisoner and hence commits a crime punishable only by death. Baron Scarpia suspects Cavaradossi and sees an opportunity to fulfill his desire to be with Floria Tosca. In an attempt to save her lover, Tosca implores Baron Scarpia to spare Cavaradossi. Scarpia agrees to let the artist live, but only if Tosca agrees to marry him instead of Cavaradossi. When he attempts to embrace her, Tosca pulls out a knife and stabs Scarpia to death. Cavaradossi is executed by a firing squad and Tosca chooses to leap from a parapet to her death instead of submitting to the oppressive Roman government.

La Boheme is set in the Latin Quarter of Paris in 1830. Four friends who share a small apartment struggle to make a living out of art and philosophy. One of the friends, a poet named Rodolpho, falls in love with Mimi - the seamstress from the neighbouring apartment. When Rodolpho realizes that Mimi has tuberculosis, he attempts to make her leave and find someone who can take better care of her. When she does, the four men are back to living their lives as poor artists. On one fateful day, Musetta returns to their door and informs them that Mimi is near death and wishes to see Rodolpho one last time.
