Why You Should Watch maliphantworks3
After wildly successful shows in 2017 and 2018, which won the South Bank Sky Arts Award, this year’s production is back - infusing fresh routines into all the familiar charm. The program will feature the world premiere of The Space Between. It is a dynamic exploration of the way in which light and shadow interact with human movement.
As a student of the Royal Ballet School and a Sadler’s Wells graduate, Russell Maliphant was an experienced performer long before he became a professional choreographer. He has worked with theatre giants such as Physical Theatre, DV8, and Rosemary Butcher. Many of his most popular works, including this production, were created in collaboration with renowned lighting designer Michael Hulls. He went on to win an Olivier Award in 2003, a Critics’ Circle National Dance Award for Best Choreography in 2006, and a South Bank Show Award the same year.
The performance begins with dances that are supplemented by animated projections designed by Panagiotis Tomaras and a range of intriguing set and lighting designs by Malphant and Tomaras. Audiences will often see a brownish golden glow illuminating the sinewy dancers on stage. From effortless twists and turns to sink softly to the floor, the performers masterfully alternate between displays of strength and vulnerability. As the show progresses, a wide range of social and emotional themes are explored with passion. maliphantworks3 undoubtedly holds a place amongst the most innovative dance shows in London this year!
Lovers of Contemporary Dance | Fans of Russell Maliphant
“The Coronet, a gloomy and atmospheric former cinema, seems an appropriate venue in which to celebrate Russell Maliphant, a choreographer for whom the interplay of light and shadow with movement and music is crucial.” - The Stage
