Why Watch The Gift
Created by Janice Okoh, an award-winning playwright, The Gift has been produced in collaboration with Eclipse. As one of the foremost black-led production companies in the United Kingdom, Eclipse has been spearheading numerous plays across the country. They have been praised for creating numerous productions that talk about racial tensions of 29th and 20th century Britain. They aim to showcase the Black British story as more than just immigration and gang crimes and create new works that enrich the stories of the Black British community. Their production, Black Men Walking received rave reviews from critics and has been nominated for “Best New Play” by UK Theatre and “Best Play 2019” by Writer’s Guild. Princess & the Hustler, which premiered in the first half of 2019 had sell-out runs across the country. Eclipse is all set to break stereotypes and records, as the fast-growing production company delivers yet another hit at West End!
It is the year 1852, and Sarah is an African girl who is adopted by Queen Victoria of England. She is raised in elite circles and is finally all set to make her return to her homeland. In a Chesire village, a middle-class black woman, also named Sarah, lives with her husband and their young child. One day, their neighbours arrive at their home. What seems like an ordinary visit turns on its head, as the well-meaning couple confesses something troubling. Watch what happens next at the Theatre Royal Stratford East.
