The Story

On the Shore of the Wide World spans three generations of a suffering family. Eighteen-year-old Alex is preparing to introduce his girlfriend Sarah to his parents. His younger brother Christopher is immediately and completely smitten with her. Their parents, Alice and Peter, are unnerved by how quickly Alex has grown up. Peter’s father Charlie is mastering card tricks and keeping his smoking a secret from his long-suffering wife Ellen. Something is about to happen that will change all their lives irrevocably as the honest scenes of domestic family life melt to reveal a sad picture of disconnection, fragile relationships, and missed moments.

Critics Reviews

By the end of the Atlantic Theater Company production – directed with gentle care by Neil Pepe — you’ve discovered that this dribbling, homespun prose has shaped itself into patterns of profound poetry, as if words in invisible ink had been held up to a flame. You may also experience the sense that something rich and strange, even cosmic, defines these unexceptional lives.

Ben Brantley,New York Times

But it occurred to me that we are intended to experience this play the way we experience life—unaware of those life-altering moments until they are behind us. The structure of Stephens’ script is just as intelligent and profound as his statement. Stephens doesn’t allow On the Shore to be neat and tidy for the sake of clarity. He dares to make his play as messy and chaotic as life often feels.
