Why Watch Three Sisters
Why Watch Three Sisters
Since its inception in 1944 in Leningrad, the Maly Drama Theatre has consistently impressed audiences across the world with their textbook acting precision and class. The company has scored various awards including an Olivier Award, the European Theatre Prize, and the Golden Mask. Consequently, in 1998, the Maly Drama Theatre was bestowed the rare honor of being given the title ‘Theatre of Europe’.
This production of Three Sisters is sewn together by seasoned director Lev Dodin, who has served as the artistic director of the company since 1982. In fact, it was Dodin’s 1998 Stars in the Morning Sky that won him a Laurence Olivier Award for Outstanding Achievement. Known for his ability to seamlessly portray a wide range of emotions through his direction, Lev Dodin returns to the London Stage to present his masterpiece, The Three Sisters.
The Story
Ranked amongst other legendary plays such as The Cherry Orchard and The Seagull by Chekhov, Three Sisters is a delightful exploration of the dramatic lives of Olga, Masha, and Irina - three sisters who live in the Prozorov family home. Olga, the oldest, is a school teacher, and Masha is a rather moody person who spends her time lounging on the couch and keeping her foolish husband at arm’s length. Irina is the youngest of them all; filled with hope about what the future holds for her. The sisters find themselves caught in murky love affairs and unexpected predicaments. The characters are expertly developed, as the memories of the past shape how the protagonists interact with each other and those around them. Join the sisters on their intriguing journey this June at the Vaudeville Theatre in London!

Critics Reviews
Directed with a surprisingly fluid mixture of delicacy and bold, almost stylized expressionism, Lev Dodin’s production is marked by emotionally vibrant, precisely detailed performances in virtually all of the significant roles.
