Why Watch Sitting

Katherine Parkinson is the winner of the BAFTA Award for her work in shows like Humans, The IT Crowd, The Honourable Woman and Doc Martin. Sitting is her debut and is highly anticipated. While the premise for the play is quite simple, Parkinson explores the immense potential it has for drama. Sitting is an excellent piece of writing that fleshes out its few characters remarkably well. It does it with so much precision and subtlety that it showcases all the connections and parallels between its characters in an unnoticeable fashion. Sarah Bedi, the director of the play, has had her work run at Westminster Abbey, Shakespeare’s Globe and the Young Vic. She allows ample breathing room for the stories of the three protagonists to thrive. It enables the actors to display some of the most wholesome and refined performances. Sitting is an exemplary piece of work that has the crispest delivery, making it a play you don't want to miss. The play is at Arcola for a limited run that lasts only a month.

The Story

The story revolves around Cassandra, Mary, and Luke, three people who sit every week to get their portraits made. They eventually begin sharing stories of themselves and their lives, some funny, some emotional. Grace Hogg-Robinson plays Cassandra, a movingly needy and vulnerable compulsive liar. Luke, a man who is all about bragging and flaunting, and who is not sure why he’s even getting his portrait made, is played by James Alexandrou. Hayley Jane Standing plays the unwittingly seductive Mary. Talk about lust, love, and loss soon takes over as the three characters open up about themselves and their deepest secrets.
