Visit the Pohutu Geyser and meet the Maoris
Start your 2.5-hour guided tour at Te Puia with an insight into the history and lineage of the indigenous New Zealand people, the Maoris. As you walk around, taking in the sights of the Te Whakarewarewa Thermal Valley, your local guide will answer all your questions. Find out more about one of New Zealand's most magnificent geothermal wonderlands with spectacular geysers, bubbling mud pools, and a 60-hectare landscape of native bush. Do not miss seeing the Pōhutu Geyser, the largest geyser in the Southern Hemisphere. With eruptions almost every hour or so, the geysers are fantastic. Some can go up to 30 meters high!
Discover Maori customs and traditions
Visit the Kiwi Conservation Centre and New Zealand Māori Arts and Crafts Institute to see demos of wood, stone, bone carving, and flax weaving. See the handcrafted taonga at the Āhua Gallery. Next, at Pikirangi Village and Rotowhio Marae, see how Maori people lived before European settlers arrived.
Enjoy the cultural program, Haka
After enjoying the thermal geysers and mud pools, in the evening, enjoy the performance of Haka (war challenge or war cry in Māori culture.) The Haka was traditionally performed by men before they went to fight a war. The cultural extravaganza will include traditional Maori performances - Phiri (traditional Maori welcome), Waiata (song), Moteatea (traditional chant), Poi, and Haka.
