Dive into the indigenous culture of New Zealand by becoming a part of the Tamaki Maori village, located on the outskirts of Rotorua. Your local guide will regale stories about the area and also fill you in on the rules to be followed once you arrive. Deep within the forest, the village people await guests with the powhiri (a welcome ceremony). Watch a re-enactment of the daily activities of the village with traditional Maori instruments in the background.
A Rangiatea culture group will perform the haka song and dance in the wharenui (meeting house). The pomp and power of your surroundings will slowly work up an appetite. Fret not, for a traditional Hangi dinner cooks underground in earthen ovens! Tuck into the local flavors of Maori with this slow-cooked meal that completes your authentic indigenous experience, leaving you with exciting stories to take home with you.
