Meet your group at Ryogoku View Hotel and start your day with a visit to the Sumo Museum. Here, you will find exhibitions and portraits relating to significant events that make up the history of sumo, along with ceremonial aprons worn by retired noteworthy wrestlers. After familiarizing yourself with this age-old tradition, you will be on your way to witness the grand tournament.

The Tokyo Grand Sumo Tournament aims to evoke the spirit of a traditional sport steeped in Shinto culture, in the hearts of a global audience. The tournament will see different ranks of sumo wrestlers grapple it out, from Makuuchi to Yokozuna or in other words, the grand champion! Sumo is characterised by a fine balance between traditional respect and electric energy, which collide to create an atmosphere where anticipation hangs heavy.

Tour Itinerary

  • 2:15 PM - 2:45 PM: Departure from Ryogoku View Hotel

  • Approx 30min visit to the Sumo Museum at Ryogoku Kokugikan

  • 3:45 PM: Makuuchi Wrestler Ceremonial Entrance

  • 4:00 PM: Yokozuna Grand Champion Ring Entrance

  • 4:10 PM: Intense bouts between the highest division wrestlers

  • 6:00 PM - 6:30 PM: End of the tour

Wheelchair Accessibility

  • For those participating in a wheelchair, please indicate the same in the free entry field at the time of booking

  • As Ryogoku Kokugikan's wheelchair storage area is on the 1st floor, please go to the 2nd floor on your own or with the help of an accompanying group member

  • When heading to the seats there are stairs and escalators going up and down

Important Information

  • Seating assignments will be given on the day of the tour

  • Please note that you will have to wait to be taken to your seat by the National Government Licensed English Guide Interpreter if one of the following events is underway at the time: a sumo match, the ring entering procession of the Makuuchi division wrestlers (dohyoiri), the ring entering procession of the Yokozuna, the ritual stomping ceremony, or a speech by the Sumo Association (on the first and the last tournament day). You will be taken to your seat once the event is over

  • Depending on congestion conditions on the day, customers may be asked to tour around the Sumo Museum on their own

  • Please refrain from bringing food and drinks into the arena. Instead, purchase refreshments from the vendors inside

  • Participants are allowed to take a break or have a meal at the dining hall while the match is going on

  • Your voucher will be emailed to you instantly.

  • Please arrive at the meeting point 15 mins before the scheduled time of your tour to avoid any delays.

  • Display the voucher on your mobile phone with a valid photo ID at the meeting point.
