Why Watch The King And I
Why Watch The King And I
Set in 1862, The King and I tells the story of an unconventional relationship between the King of Siam and Anna, a British schoolteacher. She arrives in Siam to work in the king's court, to teach the King's many wives and children the English language and western customs. Their relationship turns tumultuous as Anna struggles to accept the King's traditions and behavior and they attempt to understand each other. Will Anna and the king ever find common ground?
This version of the King and I is directed by Tony and Drama Desk Award-winning director Bartlett Sher. The 2018 Lincoln Theater production by the same creative team was widely regarded as ‘the theatrical event of 2018’. The show features all the legendary tunes from the original including ‘Whistling a Happy Tune’, ‘Shall We Dance’, and ‘Getting to Know You’. Jose Llana, who plays the King of Siam, is joined on stage by the talented Annalene Beechey as Anna.
