Why Watch Our Lady of Kibeho
Why Watch Our Lady of Kibeho
Our Lady of Kibeho is the name that was given to the supernatural appearance of the Blessed Virgin Mary to three adolescents in the 1980s in the city of Kibeho, located in the south-west of Rwanda. Katori Hall, the playwright is an Olivier Award winner and also the showrunner of Pussy Valley, a television series. She is also the recipient of numerous other awards, including the Susan Smith Blackburn Award, Lecomte du Nouy Prizes, and Lorraine Hansberry Playwriting Award.
Originally premiering in 2014, Our Lady of Kibeho makes a return to West End with direction by James Dacre. The atmospheric choral music and set design have been praised and reels audiences in. The performance of the central trio of girls is stellar, with each of them showing a different degree of adolescent awkwardness and energy. Dacre has also been praised for not delving into explanations for what the girls have witnessed and rather reinforces the idea of them as messengers.
The Story
It is the early 1980s in the southwestern part of Rwanda. Alphonsine, a young girl at Kibeho College, claims that she saw a vision of the Virgin Mary. She tells everyone that the vision warned her that an unfortunate set of events would occur soon and that Rwanda would soon become hell on earth. Her friends ignore her vision and pleas and even invites a rebuke from her school.
The unimaginable, however, does occur. Another student has the same vision. Soon, a few more students have the vision of the Virgin Mary warning them about the events that were going to unfold. Could it be that the vision is perhaps real? Is it possible for this impossible event to have truly occurred? Our Lady of Kibeho makes for an entertaining play and is guaranteed to make you question faith by the end.
