Why Watch Pieter-Dirk Uys: When in Doubt Say Darling
A satirist and political activist from South Africa, Pieter-Dirk Uys returns to West End for his new show Pieter-Dirk Uys: When in Doubt Say, Darling. Having performed on stage for more than 40 years, Pieter-Dirk brings a new perspective on numerous relevant topics making the round across the globe. He has opinions on everything from Brexit to LGBT movements. Through his dark comedy and humor, Pieter-Dirk has criticized the actions of the South African government. Pieter-Dirk’s performances are continuously evolving, and he rarely talks about the very same topics from one show to the next. It is almost impossible to critique any of his performances, and detours into new terrain are always exciting. His ability to chat with the audience as if he has known them for years is spectacular to witness in person. Regardless of whether you love or hate this figure, witnessing him on stage is an experience unlike any other!
Cape Town is the first major city to have run out of water. The elections are just beyond the horizon at South Africa, and these times call for innovative measures. The show is all about attempting to correct nearly 40 years of mess in politics. You will hear commentary about everything from the tripartite system to apartheid. Pieter-Dirk’s demeanor is such that you will feel as if you are having a chat with an old friend. He barely moves around much, and attempts to make the product appeal to the audience is minimal. Yet, his easy-going disposition and attitude are charming. The stage is filled with boxes, and the numerous props, such as hair, glasses, newspapers, and hats form the crux of the show. Impersonations abound, and you will be left grinning from ear to ear with his wonderful confluence of sketches and commentary. From emotional and endearing sketches about a man moving to a village as retirement to quick and witty sketches regarding some influential political figures, there is no doubt that you will feel a wide array of emotions wash over you!
