Grammy and Tony-nominated writers Irene Sankoff and David Hein interviewed numerous people from the village of Gander on the 10th anniversary of the devastating 9/11 attacks in New York, and the characters of the play are based on the citizens of Gander. A star-studded cast, with Rachel Tucker playing the role of Beverly, is all set to enrapture audiences. David Hein and Irene Sankoff have wonderfully portrayed the compassion and strength of will demonstrated by the residents of Gander in the trying circumstances. The emotional impact of the musical is undoubtedly profound and is all the more pertinent in current times.
The Story
The residents of Gander describe how they learn about the attacks in the early hours of the 11th of September, 2001. Soon, 38 flights are forced to divert and end up landing at Gander Airport. With more than 7000 people on board these flights, the population of the town immediately doubles. Although severely unequipped for such a large influx of people, the inhabitants quickly get into action. Passengers on the plane are not informed about the reason for the emergency landing, and widespread confusion prevails, while rumors float about.
The passengers are then moved to shelters that are fashioned across the town. As they learn about the events that have unfolded back in New York, they immediately attempt to contact families. During these trying times, the passengers are astonished at the extraordinary hospitality and warmth of the inhabitants of Gander.
