English National Ballet: She Persisted

Experience the magic of three exquisite performances choreographed by the talented Annabelle Lopez, Pina Bausch, and Stina Quaegebeur. Exploring themes ranging from the struggles of an artist to a woman’s search for independence, She Persisted is an enjoyable sequel to the English National Ballet’s first premier of an all-female choreography programme ‘She Said’ in 2016.

Why Watch She Persisted

She Persisted weaves the brilliance of some of the most renowned choreographers in the field into one entertaining show. Winner of the International Choreographer’s Competition and Olivier Award nominee Annabelle Lopez Ochoa brings her intriguing narrative-driven piece back to the West End stage after a successful run in 2016’s She Said. She is joined by Pina Bausch, a Goethe Prize and Laurence Olivier Award winner, who adds her own inimitable touch to Igor Stravinsky’s classic The Rite of Spring. The final performance put together by Stina Quaegebeur is a new arrival this season, and is sure to match the brilliance of the other two.

The Show

The show begins with Annabelle Lopez Ochoa’s ‘Broken Wings’, written for a troupe of 26 incredible dancers from the English National Ballet. You will be taken on a voyage through the struggles of Frida Kahlo, a Mexican artist known for her emphatic and sometimes bizarre self-portraits. She faces harrowing challenges as she is forced to confront her conflicting worlds of art, relationships, and physical struggles, and this is brought out expertly by Lopez’s choreography. This is followed by Le Sacre du Printemps by Pina Bausch. Featuring 13 male and 13 female dancers, the piece vividly explores the onset of spring. Set to Stravinsky’s legendary score, it returns to the West End stage after sell-out performances in 2017. The show ends with ‘Nora’, a brilliant new piece by Stina Quaegebeur. Inspired by the main character in ‘A Doll’s House’ by Henrik Ibsen, it follows the tale of a woman in search of meaning and independence.
