why watch the dead city
First staged in post-war Europe, Erich Wolfgang Korngold’s great opera explores grief, loss, and longing so deeply and uniquely. This made it one of the most critically-acclaimed operas in the 1920s – a title it still holds today, even with a new generation of theatre-goers.
The story revolves around a man named Paul. After his wife's death, Paul retreats from the world to live in the memories of yesterday. However – on meeting a dancer who looks exactly like his wife and reminds him of her – his emotional state spirals out of control. He’s forced to deal with the blurred lines between his past, the present, and his newly awakened desires.
Annilese Miskimmon, the English National Opera's Artistic Director, directs The Dead City with Kirill Karabits of the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra conducting Korngold's theatrical orchestration. Book your tickets today to be a part of the audience attending this iconic production.
