Why Watch A History Of Water In The Middle East

Award-winning writer Sabrina Mahfouz brings this new play to West End. She holds passports of both England and Egypt and is perhaps the perfect person to explore the Middle East owing to her heritage. Hailed as "theatrical dynamite” owing to the poetic and musical influences in her plays, Mahfouz is one of the most interesting poets and playwrights of this generation.

A region that is best known for its oil, the show explores how water is quickly becoming one of the most fought over commodities in the Middle East. Mahfouz delves into the Middle East, with the goal of finding who holds power here. Oil has always been the main commodity, but with increasing water scarcity, will it soon become the natural resource that dictates control?

Stef O'Driscoll's directorial venture will take you through twelve different countries in the Middle East from the eyes of the women who live there. Known for her unconventional style of direction, O’Driscoll brings forth a different side of the Middle East and captures the poetic and musical themes that underline the play.

    The Story

The show explores the imperial British ownership and thoughts about natural resources. The next global disaster is likely to occur due to water scarcity, especially in the Middle East which is richer in natural resources such as oil. Water politics is a defining part of the political landscape of the Middle East. The use, allocation, control, and supply of water play a critical role in the power and influence of the various groups and factions. Learn from the locals about the natural resource that dictates power in these regions. Additionally, understand the importance of the environmental impact of water scarcity and how it will shape the future of everyone across the globe!
