What is M+ Museum Hong Kong?

M+ Museum in Hong Kong is hotly-anticipated to be one of the largest museums of modern and contemporary visual culture in the world dedicated to collecting, exhibiting, and interpreting visual art, moving image, design, and architecture of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. The world-class facility aims to inspire, enlighten, and delight the public by fostering creativity and expression.

Why visit M+ Museum Hong Kong?

M+ Museum will be a public forum for exchanges, encounters, and activities between people and art; it will be a radical platform harboring a broad curatorial scope, and featuring installations and performances. M+ will reflect a fine balance maintained by Hong Kong between the local and international while promoting the innovative character of the twenty-first century. The museum is sure to redefine a visual culture shaped by its Asian context.

    M+ Museum Hong Kong: Collections

The collection at M+ Museum will comprise a broad range of media including sketches, electronic media, installation, architectural models, printed matter, objects, painting, photography, sculpture, and time-based intangibles. Moreover, the museum already owns a collection of 4000 pieces: works by Nam June Paik, Andreas Gursky, Kishio Suga, Frank Lloyd Wright, Sou Fujimoto, and Shiro Kuramata, to name a few. This is in addition to its Sigg Collection, which is a sizeable donation of over 1,500 pieces made by a Swiss collector, Uli Sigg, a universally recognized private collector of Chinese contemporary art.

M+ Museum Hong Kong: Building Design & Construction

The building is designed by Herzog & de Meuron and aims to become a significant presence in the Kowloon skyline. It is built on an efficient system of spaces, facilities, and functions. Accessible through multiple entry points, the podium covers 17,000 square meters of exhibition space, three cinemas, a lecture theatre, a learning hub, a museum shop, performance spaces, cafés, a mediatheque, and a public roof terrace with views to Victoria Harbour and the Hong Kong skyline. Shooting up from the podium will be the vertical museum tower which will harbor a library, archive, study center, member’s facilities, museum offices and restaurants, and an LED façade for the display of artists’ moving image works.

Inspired by the presence of an underground rail tunnel beneath the M+ building, which crosses the site diagonally, Herzog & de Meuron developed an additional sunken level around it, an ‘Industrial Space’ made up of a diverse ensemble of functions and creative areas: a “black-box” exhibition space, an auditorium, spaces for installations, performances and innovative forms of art exhibitions.
