The Highlands of Iceland cover a large part of the country. Most of it is an uninhabitable desert, due to the volcanic ash that dominates the region. Precipitation infiltrates the ground too fast to support any form of plant growth, and as a result, grey and black earth is found throughout. Several of Iceland's largest glaciers such as Langjokull and Hofsjokull are found in the Highlands. Only on the shores of the glacier rivers can any form of vegetation be found.
Landmannalaugar is located in the Icelandic Highlands and is well known for its numerous geothermal pools and landscape. It is also famous for its hiking routes, of which the 4-day long trail, known as Laugavegur leads to Thorsmork, another well-known hiking spot. In the summers, horse riding is also available, and places that are difficult to reach on foot and by car can be visited on horseback. Through the tourist season in summer, a green American school bus houses the Mountain Mall, which sells refreshments and other necessities. Some of the most colorful mountains can be found in the surrounding regions.

Your tour to Landmannalaugar will begin early in the morning. You will briefly stop at three villages, where more passengers will climb aboard the bus. You can buy hiking maps on the bus to help guide you at Landmannalaugar. You will see the massive Mt. Hekla, shaped like an overturned boat, during your journey. Its ice-capped peak makes it look very placid and serene. The truth, however, couldn’t be more different. During the middle ages, Mt. Hekla was termed the “Gateway to Hell” due to its frequent eruptions. You will then continue to one of the most popular trekking locations in Iceland. Landmannalaugar is one of the best examples of Iceland’s brilliant landscape. You will have 6 hours to hike the picturesque surroundings. The volcanic activity and remnants of ash and dust can be seen throughout the area. You can also find a small shop selling basic groceries and coffee, to fuel you for the day’s activities. You can take a 2-hour trek to Mt. Brennisteinsalda, which translates to sulfur wave in English. Several hues and shades are visible, the green of the mosses to the blue and black of ash and lava and red from the iron deposits in the soil. The incredible landscape of Iceland can be seen all around you.
You can see several hot springs and pools around. Once you have finished a tiring, yet satisfying trek around the region, a relaxing bath in a hot spring awaits you. Once you settle into the pool, watch your stress and tiredness melt away from your body. The Mountain Mall cafe, situated in a bus, will have refreshments to help you recharge your energy levels. You will then take the bus back to Reykjavik and reach the capital by around 10 PM.
