what to expect

What is Studio Ghibli Theme Park?

Studio Ghibli is a cultural sensation in Japan, known for classics like My Neighbor Totoro, Princess Mononoke, and Spirited Away. The animation studio is the brainchild of world-renowned Hayao Miyazaki, whose movies have served as a glorious gateway to the world of anime. The studio now aims to enter the world of theme parks, featuring attractions that will strongly reflect elements of movies previously released by the studio.

Why Visit Studio Ghibli Theme Park?

Studio Ghibli Theme Park will work to bring Miyazaki’s painted visions to life. Situated on a 200-hectare plot of land in the Aichi Expo Memorial Park, the theme park aims to recreate the sprawling pastoral setting of Ghibli films, featuring nature trails lined with statues of spiders, boars, and other Ghibli characters. It is, moreover, an eco-friendly park, focusing on construction without destruction. What makes the park stand out is probably its absence of roller coasters and huge rides often found in other amusement parks. There will be rides, but the focus will lie on immersing visitors in the world of Studio Ghibli.

Studio Ghibli Theme Park Features and Attractions

The park is split into five different worlds, each based on one or more Studio Ghibli titles.

Youth Hill Area

Themed after Howl’s Moving Castle, the Springtime of Life Hill will feature a steampunk elevator that will grant the guests a view of the whole land. Situated around the entrance of the park, this area will contain lots of 19th century-inspired accents, including a full-sized replica of the Chikyuya antique shop from Whisper of the Heart.

Ghibli Large Warehouse Area

This area will be home to a fusion of Western and Japanese-style buildings. It will also feature an indoor attraction that will house an exhibition room, a 170-seat theater, a children’s play area, shops, cafes, and a dining area inspired by the mysterious town from Spirited Away.

Dondoko Forest Area

This area is named after “Dondoko Odori,” a dance performed by Satsuki, Mei, and Totoro in My Neighbor Totoro. It will be fashioned around the piece of land that already features a realistic replica of Satsuki and Mei’s house (built for the 2005 World Expo). The idea is to use the lush and rural landscape to reflect the Showa period (1926 – 1989). Planned paths in the forest and walking tours will be arranged here.

Mononoke’s Village Area

Dedicated to Princess Mononoke, this area will be based on Irontown (Tatara), the setting for the film. With the aim to transport visitors to the Muromachi period It will also be home to sculptures of spirit demon Tatari Gami, Okkoto (Boar God), and other mysterious creatures from the movie.

Witch’s Valley Area

Inspired by the wastelands of Howl’s Moving Castle and the beautiful Karikiya home from Kiki’s Delivery Service, this area will include restaurants, rest areas, and recreational spots.
